Ever since it was announced back in June 2019, we’ve been beside ourselves waiting for the Arcade1Up Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cabinet to finally go on sale in the UK. Mercifully, this happened just a couple of weeks ago, and we’ve finally had the chance to build ours.
For those of you who may not have come across Arcade1Up before, they are the leading retailer in bringing your favourite old school arcade games back to life, in beautiful 4-foot tall cabinets, complete with immersive sound and high-res displays. Whether you’re looking to stroll down memory lane with Pac-Man, beat your friends to death in Mortal Kombat or destroy the city in Rampage, Arcade1Up have something to offer you.
With their Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cabinet, the team has restored the classic TMNT and TMNT: Turtles in Time games, allowing players to go to war with the likes of Bebop and Rocksteady by selecting any and all of your 4 favourite pizza-eating heroes.
The build process is extremely easy. In fact, it is easier than the Street Fighter II cabinet we picked up late last year. Whether it’s because this build was tag teamed rather than attempted solo is a possibility, but either way it just seemed like a much more pleasant – and less sweaty – experience than before.
Gameplay for both titles is pretty much how you remember it, albeit a little sexed up for the 2020 generation. Every grunt and groan is exactly how it was back in the arcades, the only difference playing today is the floor is (presumably) less sticky! Alternatively, Turtles in Time may feel a little different, depending on whether you played it in the arcade or at home on your Super Nintendo. There are some story and character differences depending on your preference, but to be honest, you soon stop worrying about the little things as you lose yourself in the experience.
The biggest downside, of course, is the price. To pick up this cabinet, complete with an embossed base (which is usually sold separately), cost us around £399, which is undoubtedly a lot of money. However, if you were going to pick up an original version of the TMNT cabs you would be paying a heck of a lot more, and without knowing how long it would likely survive after spending the last couple of decades in someone’s garage. Ultimately you have to ask yourself how much you really want to relive those bygone days in the arcades, throwing your pocket money into the coin slot in the hopes that you’ll just have enough left to kick Shredder’s ass. We’d say it’s worth every penny.
Arcade1Up has done it again. They have taken an iconic and beloved video game classic and restored them for a whole new generation to enjoy with the same boys and girls that took out bank loans to play them the first time around. Both TMNT titles stay true to the originals and offer the same fun and frustration that made them so damn addictive in the first place. Let’s just hope that the success of the latest batch of cabinets encourages other licenced properties to join forces with the brand to bring even more amazing titles into our home arcades.
