Grab a pizza, a cold one and a couple of your nearest and dearest, because your new favourite party game is here, and it’s going to take you on a trip, all the way to ‘Otter-Space’.

Today sees the Steam and console release of The Otterman Empire, Tri-Heart Interactives long-awaited shooter about a world inhabited by cute and fluffy critters that are forced to band together to protect the galaxy from an evil overlord by the name of Tiko.

The Otterman Empire is a quick-paced, fast fire, party shooter in which players must work together across a series of unique maps, waging war against evil otter Tiko and his dastardly TikoTech, with only your jet pack and trusty water blaster standing between freedom and certain doom.

The Otterman Empire

Like any great party game you’re not in this alone. The Otterman Empire allows you to invite 3 of your favourite furry freedom fighters into the mix to join your campaign and restore order to the Empire once and for all. Sure, you can fly solo and play the game by yourself, but to experience The Otterman Empire to its fullest you need to get your friends, kids, neighbours or even that creepy dude you see hanging around at the bar you like, to join in the fun.

You don’t need to play the game for long to see just how much love Tri-Heart has poured into the concept. Aesthetically, The Otterman Empire is a treat for the senses. The frenzied gameplay forces you to move around each map like a mad man, but don’t forget to take in the sights because both the level and character design are top-notch, and reminds this reviewer of early Crash Bandicoot, a compliment of the very highest order. Players are also given the opportunity to design their own skins for their chosen heroes, which is a nice touch and a welcome change of pace in between rounds.

Skipping the tutorial is a big no-no, as it can take a minute to familiarise yourself with the mechanics of the game. Be patient and learn the game, because once you’ve got a handle on how to hit and run, there is literally no stopping you.

If you’re playing this on the Nintendo Switch, then we’d highly recommend docking before you play. This will free you up to swing your arms around wildly as you blast off into orbit, take down some TikoTecho scum and avoid certain death all in the same breath. Just try not to knock your kids’ teeth out in the process. We hear the tooth fairy charges a pretty penny these days.

Final Words:

Prepare for “otter chaos” as you take to the skies in this wildly exciting action-packed adventure. Rounds are fast and frantic but thankfully supported by decent gameplay mechanics and responsive controls. Move over Fortnite, our new favourite party shooter has landed, and it’s otter this world!
