WWE has unexpectedly announced it has released a number of its talents, citing companywide cutbacks amid the coronavirus pandemic as the reason behind its latest cull.
Perhaps the most surprising name on the list is former WWE Champion and Olympic Gold Medallist Kurt Angle, who retired as an active competitor at last years WrestleMania in a losing effort against Baron Corbin. In hindsight, Angle has not been seen since being taken out by The Fiend last August, but still had value as an agent or ambassador for the company.
Other names released include EC3, Drake Maverick, Curt Hawkins, Aiden English, Lio Rush and Heath Slater. Shockingly, AJ Styles’ running buddies Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson were also released.
We’ll update this list if any more names are added over the coming days.
New names added to the list of cuts include Rowan, Sarah Logan, long time referee Mike Chioda, Primo and Epico, Mike and Maria Kanellis, No Way Jose and Zack Ruder.
Rusev, Aleksander Jaksic and Deonna Purrazzo have also been released.
Several road agents and back stage staff have also either been released or furloughed including Shane Helms, Fit Finlay, Scott Armstrong, Lance Storm and Mike Rotunda.
It is truly a sad day for the WWE family.
