When he’s not cussing up a storm as Deadpool, or turning fandoms on their head as Pikachu, Ryan Reynolds has also been known to champion some of the more geek chic franchises, playing a massive role in bringing many of them to the big – and not so big – screen. And now, according to Netflix, he will turn his acting chops to the role of a lifetime – as the one and only Dirk the Daring in a live-action Dragon’s Lair movie.
Dragon’s Lair was one of the most innovative and frustrating arcade games of the 1980s, and has maintained a cult following ever since, recently enjoying a revival on modern consoles like Xbox and Nintendo Switch. It follows the adventures of a handsome but smarmy knight as he searches for his beloved princess in a haunted and dangerous castle, complete with a skeleton army, deadly falls, and a token dragon.
Casting Ryan Reynolds is a stroke of genius, as he pretty much embodies Dirk in his day-to-day life – at least his public one. Joining Reynolds are Dan and Kevin Hageman of The Lego Movie and Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark fame, with original creator Don Bluth jumping in as a producer.
No word yet on when we’ll see Dragon’s Lair on the streaming service, and with things the way they are at the moment its unlikely production will begin any time soon. We’ll have more details when they drop.
