Do you like superheroes? Do you like fun and frantic multiplayer mayhem? Do you like running? Do you like a good challenge? Then have I got a game for you!

SpeedRunners is a unique take on the platforming genre by DoubleDutch Games (and published by tinyBuild). You and (usually) 3 others run and dodge pitfalls, traps, and other barriers in an attempt to leave all others behind until you are the sole survivor. As you run, you can grapple and swing from ceilings, grab power-ups, and slide tackle your opponents. The controls are tight, allowing precise platforming.

Power-ups range from crates that you can leave behind to trip up other runners to molten rocks that knock out anything in their path. Strategic use of power-ups is key to obtaining victory in SpeedRunners. Climbing up a narrow corridor? Drop a crate on top of your enemies to halt their progress and watch them fall to failure. Gliding across a long chasm? Yank an opponent back with a special grappling hook to send them plummeting to the ground below. It’s all about timing and using what you have to your advantage.

There are 3 modes of play: Story, Versus, and Practice. All pretty self-explanatory. In story mode you play as Speed Runner as you progress through the 1960’s-esque comic book story. Everything about this game is very much of that style. The music, the characters, the dialogue. So, if you’re into that kind of aesthetic, you’ll definitely enjoy this game. As you advance in the story, you’ll unlock more characters for use in Versus mode, as well as more stages. After completing each of the 4 chapters, you unlock a comic giving you the back story of the main villain of that chapter.

Versus mode is where it gets a bit crazy. You can play local on the same console, local wireless, or online against players around the globe. And talk about a chaotic multiplayer experience! You choose from 8 characters unlocked through the story mode. There are 19 other characters unlocked via paid DLC as well. In addition, there are several different cosmetic boost trails that can be unlocked or purchased via paid DLC.

Final Words:

For the price ($14.99/£12.99) SpeedRunners is great fun. Especially as a multiplayer experience, be it local or online. Each of the 5 DLC’s are $2.99/£2.69 each, but the game is completely playable without them as they are mostly cosmetic. If you’re looking for an excellent, frantic, chaotic, fun game to play with others, SpeedRunners is an absolute must-have.
