Playoffs are right around the corner. And if you’re a fan of teams like the Cincinnati Bengals or the Miami Dolphins, maybe it’s time for a break. What better way to take a break from football than playing Football Game. Football Game is not about playing football as the title might suggest. It’s a dark narrative adventure game about a high school football star trying to meet up with the love of his life before a big game.

Set in 1987, the game starts off with Tommy, a high school quarterback for the Purchase County Turbines, waking up late at night after some boozing. He needs to get his life together and head to school for the football game where his girlfriend Suzy is waiting for him. Using point-and-click style gameplay, Tommy can investigate and interact with the world around him, picking up items to solve puzzles and move the plot forward.

Without being overly wordy, the game is narrative heavy. Talking to fellow students you find that things might not be exactly as they seem. As you complete objectives like finding a lighter for nicotine addicted teens, or making your mom a cup of tea, the story will slowly unravel as Tommy is hit with strings of flashbacks. Tommy really loves Suzy, but why isn’t she waiting for him like she promised?

It’s tough to go to in-depth in this game without revealing too many spoilers, as it takes only about an hour to beat. Even with such short playtime, it proves to be an interesting psychological thriller that will leave you asking questions. Music elevates the intended emotions, and at one point you can jam out to your favourite cassette tape after stealing your dad’s car. The soundtrack is worth a spin.

Final Words:

Football Game tells a thrilling and twisted story about a high school football star in love. The point and click puzzles keep gameplay involved all the while worldbuilding is illuminated through your interactions. This is a short and sweet experience that stays engaging, and worth picking up if you have an hour to spare.
