For fans of graphic novels, A Winter’s Daydream might just be the adventure you have been waiting for. Published by the team over at Sometimes You in conjunction with author ebi-hime and is currently available on Xbox, Playstation and Nintendo consoles. We’ve flicked through this text-based story to give you our thoughts so let’s skip to the final chapter and see if it meets expectations.
To set the tone, if you are looking for a high impact action experience you should bow out now. What is on offer here is a chance to sit back, relax and read… yes that’s pretty much all there is from this game. The story can be progressed with the touch of a button and has no branching options meaning the journey to the end is a linear route.
Our tale follows teenager Yuu, who has been living the big city life for the past couple of years, as he returns to his family home in the peaceful countryside for some unwanted New Year’s festivities. He was not looking forward to going back, time would slow down to a crawl as the mundanity creeps back in or a least that’s what he thought. His return was met with much joy but he soon begins to clash with his younger sister who is every bit the pain in the neck he remembers, as tensions rise he decides to visit his grandma. From this point onwards the story really goes batshit crazy so we’ll leave that for you to find out.
As for the overall package, there are some nice touches but ultimately there is not a massive amount of technical detail within A Winters Daydream. The art style is of a reasonable level helping to back up the story being told. The animation is very basic consisting of a number of simple wipes and transitions to give the illusion of movement. The soundtrack is pleasant and works to accompany the events in the story but most will probably play this with the sound off to concentrate on the words in front of you. Depending on how fast you read, you will be done and dusted in a couple of hours and there is no replayability to be had. If this was a physical book at least you could sell it on.
A Winters Daydream is a short book that can be completed in one sitting, it isn’t really a game and barely an interactive experience. For fans of the genre and fantasy novels then there is some appeal to be had if you get on board with the characters. There is a good level of investment in the world being created thanks to the excellent work of ebi-hime but at £5.39 the price is a little on the high side even for a budget title.
