I really enjoy the 8/16 bit horror genre. Actually, scratch that. I LOVE the 8/16 bit horror genre. Games like Uncanny Valley, Lone Survivor, and Distraint are absolute gems. So, when Just Ignore Them came up for review, my interest was piqued. Just Ignore Them is a point & click horror game similar in style to the RPG Maker horror games from years back. Honestly, as much as I wanted to enjoy this game, it was an absolute slog to get through. Even with the help of an online walkthrough.

You play as Mark, a regular Joe haunted by strange creatures since childhood. His mom’s advice on how to deal with these ghouls has stuck with him this entire time: “Just ignore them.” Other than that, there’s not much else to say about this duller-than-dishwater story.

The gameplay can be summed up in one sentence: “I can’t do anything with it.” Several puzzles can be solved by finding and combining items. Anything that you click on that doesn’t pertain to solving the puzzles results in Mark saying “I can’t do anything with it.” No snarky little quips, no interesting interactions, nothing. So, you end up seeing this dialogue several times throughout the game.

The puzzles can be somewhat cryptic and the game does little to hint at what’s needed to progress, which is why I needed the walkthrough. I almost NEVER use a walkthrough. It is my last resort when it comes to puzzles in a game. But I just found myself not caring enough to spend the time to solve the puzzles.

The ghoulish creatures are easily avoided by doing exactly what the game says, ignoring them. If you see a bloodstain or a crude smiley face above something, don’t interact with it. If you do, you die. Simple as that. So the threat of death is very minimal. The music is almost non-existent except during certain sections, but even then, it quickly fades to nothing after a few moments.

Final Words:

As much as I wanted to enjoy Just Ignore Them, I just couldn’t. The gameplay, the story, the nearly non-existent music. The only positive I can give this game is the retro aesthetic, but even that’s not enough to save it. I really can’t recommend this game even to fans of the genre.
