There’s no shortage of online multiplayer games these days, but while most focus on the battle royale side of things, some go a more asymmetric route (Friday the 13th, Dead by Daylight, etc). OBAKEIDORO! by FREE STYLE Games takes the latter approach. Albeit with a less gory, more cartoony style, which I find refreshing.

OBAKEIDORO! (or “Bogeyrun”) is a game adored by ghosts who spirit children away to play. Each game features 1 ghost attempting to catch 3 humans in a game of hide and seek. As the ghost, you’ll have to capture each child and lock them in a cage. As the humans, you have to survive for 3 minutes without all 3 children being caught. You can play offline with bots or with 3 other players online.

As the ghost, you can fly through walls and other objects and the music changes to signify that a human is close. If you grab a child, you put them in the cage and continue after the others. After you capture a child, your grab is disabled for a few seconds. You start off with only 1 ghost (or monster) to choose from, but you can unlock 8 others with coins you earn through playing matches. Each monster has different skills such as temporarily being able to track humans after being hit by the humans’ lantern attack.

As the humans, you have a lantern that you can use to stun the monster, but it only has one use. If a teammate is captured you can free them by hitting a number of switches on the cage and opening it. When this happens, their lantern will recharge and they can use it once more. There is only 1 lantern to choose from at first, but you can unlock more (13 more to be exact) with coins earned from playing matches. Like the different monsters, the lanterns also have different skills. Although only four or five of them currently have skills. Hopefully, more will be patched in in the future.

Final Words:

While I enjoy the game, it’s not without its faults. My biggest complaint is that due to internet lag, winning as the monster can be a chore and sometimes near impossible. I also feel that at a price of $19.99 (£16.99), it is a bit lacking in content, but as stated, that can be fixed in future updates. Overall, OBAKEIDORO! is very charming and a perfect game for this time of year.
