A Plague Tale: Innocence is an adventure stealth horror set during 1348 in a small town called Aquitaine, which is located in the south-west region of France. The opening to the game is very emotionally charged and sets the tone that flows throughout.
The tale begins as you meet main character, a teenager called Amicia, and her father who are out hunting with their dog, Lion. Lion runs off to catch a deer that Amicia injured with her slingshot before she takes chase also. When she finally finds the deer it has been stripped of all its meat and Lion is whimpering in the corner. He suddenly gets dragged underground by an unseen force.
Shell-shocked the pair return home and you are sent to get your mother, an alchemist, who has been caring for your younger brother. If this all wasn’t dramatic enough A Plague Tale kicks into high gear as your father is executed in front of your eyes by a legion of troops who are looking your brother, for reasons we won’t divulge. In a final attempt to escape the house your mother tells you to seek refuge with a doctor by the name of Laurentius before being murdered also.
This is where the story really begins, the journey of brother and sister surviving and searching. It soon becomes apparent that this will not be an easy quest, the plague has ravaged the locale adding to our protagonist’s woes. There isn’t a big focus on combat from the outset, instead the pair use their wits to outsmart the infected while sparingly using the slingshot and fire to their advantage. This is the basic concept of A Plague Tale, the developers have created a fantastic narrative to play though so as always that’s as much as we’ll tell.
As mentioned combat is not the main focus but the fighting mechanics are simply great. The sling can be upgraded to make it more powerful as you progress but often it can be used as a tool to solve the various different puzzles throughout. Visually it is a beautiful looking game, the transition from being in the city surroundings to battlefield areas look stunning. It is perfectly eerie, even in the daylight you never know what you are going to encounter or when you are going to have to run. The music again is superb and emphasizes the plight of brother and sister.
This game is a slow burn. If you are wanting a stealth action game this probably isn’t for you but if you do want a thought-provoking story with added stealth and a sprinkle of combat as a backup then a Plague Tale: Innocence is worth every penny. The relationship between the brother and sister is beautifully crafted and superbly voice acted by the young talent. The story is fantastic and a game that is wholeheartedly recommended.
