A lot can be said about games with simple gameplay. Sometimes all you need is running and jumping. Maybe a little punching or shooting from time to time. I, myself, am a massive fan of 2D platformers (Mario, Megaman, etc). Sometimes, however, simple games can fall a little flat. Such is the case with Super Jumpy Ball.

There are 5 different game modes. Each involving rolling and bouncing a ball. Some involving traps, some not. I’ll break each down for you…

LEVELS (1 Player): This is the standard “reach the flag” mode. Avoid spikes and saw blades while navigating to the red flag at the end of the stage. There’s also a star in a random part of the stage to collect. No reason to collect it. Just adds a little extra challenge, I guess.

BASKETBALL (1-8 Players): Exactly what it sounds like. A basketball goal will randomly appear in different areas of the stage. Bounce your ball into the net to score 2 points (3 points for a flawless shot). Not much else to it.

ENDLESS SURVIVOR (1-8 Players): Climb a tower of obstacles while a bed of spikes steadily rises under you. Make it as high as you can before the spikes pop your poor little ball.

SPIKE BATTLE (1-8 Players): Each ball has a spike attached to the bottom. Jump on your opponents (essentially Mario style) to pop them and score a point. The player with the most points after 2 minutes wins.

ENDLESS RUNNER (1 Player): Run (well… roll) as far as you can within the time limit while avoiding spikes and saw blades. Each time you pass a flag, you get more time. I, honestly, had more fun with this mode than any of the others. The only problem is… IT’S NOT ENDLESS! Once you get to a certain point, the ground drops off and “BETA END” is spelt out across the level. You fall off and you can keep rolling off-screen until the time ends.

Final Words:

I was ready to rate this game a 1 based off of the levels mode, but after playing the other modes and seeing how much more they add… I’m still going to have to rate it a 1. Definitely not worth the $6.29 (£4.99) price tag. Maybe you could get some multiplayer fun out of it with a group of friends, but for a single-player experience, I would recommend going with any of the multitude of great platformers on the Switch.
