WWE: NXT TakeOver Toronto – Recap

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Once again NXT set a new standard last night for Main Event matches for supershow. The red hot crowd in Toronto were in awe all night and rightly so. Let’s look back on another epic night of action from the Black and Gold Brand.

This writer in the preview for this show said that the Street Profits needed a big win here to truly put their stamp on the tag division with their reign as champions. This was a home run! The champs looked as sharp as their opponents here as the two teams assembled a gripping encounter. Fish and O’Reily lost nothing in defeat here as they again showed why they are one of the finest teams on the planet right now and deserve to be spoken of the same vein as teams such as the Young Bucks and the Lucha Bros. Incredible effort from all four men here.

Io Shirai and Candice LeRae waged war in a full-on scrap here that was even better than expected by many. As a heel Shirai has really found herself as of late and though unexpected, the win for her was expected at the same time as she continues to flourish in her new role. A great contest once again as both Women continue to shine more in NXT.

The Triple Threat match for the North American title had a lot of hype going into Takeover with even the more jaded fans wondering how this would turn out. The match was a blistering battle from start to finish with at various points of the match-all three men looking like they would take the victory. The Dream continues his dominance over the title and keeps adding and prestige and credibility to its growing legacy.

Shayna Baszler retained once again. Unquestionable is the fact that at this stage she will go down in NXT history as the greatest NXT Women’s champion ever as her victory over Mia Kim was as good as any women’s match you will see over SummerSlam weekend. No more second-guessing the champ from this writer!

Years from now when we look back and discuss the all-time great WWE/NXT trilogy of matches, Adam Cole vs Johnny Gargano may top the list. Their 2 out of 3 falls tour de force last night was something very special to behold. Emotional, compelling, dangerous and scary. It was everything you would want and more from a show-closing title match. As a fan, you could not ask for anything more. This writer is not a fan of rating match by stars or numbers but this match came close to breaking that rule!

Another weekend stealing show from NXT. Yes, AEW are ready to set the wrestling world on fire once again but from purely an in-ring standpoint, No company or Brand can compete with NXT. More please!!!
