Rocko’s Modern Life literally crash-landed back into the 21st-century today with the long-awaited reboot Static Cling, courtesy of our favourite pals at Netflix.
After 20 years floating in space, Rocko and his old pals Heffer and Philbert, and faithful mutt Spunky return to their old stomping grounds of O-Town only to find that the world they left behind has actually left them behind. Woah, that’s deep. The simpler times of the 1990s have been replaced with a world of technology and convenience and it all just feels so wrong to our hero – but at least he has his favourite TV show – The Fatheads – to keep him sane … oh wait, no he doesn’t. It was cancelled years ago. Desperate for something to cling on to, Rocko sets about organising a reboot of his beloved program, roping in his long-suffering neighbour Mr. Bighead along the way, and forcing his frienemy to come to terms with a few of his very own skeletons.
Static Cling is a story about letting go of the past and embracing the future. At the forefront, it is a story about Rocko being dragged kicking and screaming into the current era, but at its heart, there’s a much deeper story here, and in true Rocko’s Modern Life form it pushes the boundaries, immediately catapulting Static Cling ahead many of its modern-day counterparts. It’s a fun twist and one that we don’t intend to spoil in this review.
All your favourites are back for this special, making Static Cling feel like a long-lost episode from way back when rather than an all-new adventure. The animation style has not been updated, nor has the colour palette. In fact, even the story could have existed in the show’s original run, save for a few modern-day references. This plays perfectly into the whole nostalgia theme, and there’s even a moment in which Rocko watches the Fathead’s reboot and immediately turns on it before realising change is good, negating any actual negativity so-called fans might have about the real-life reboot. So much so meta.
Sadly, this is likely going to be a one-off. Rocko’s Modern Life is still alive and well thanks to being given a new lease of life in the world of comics, and despite how well this special will undoubtedly be received, we probably shouldn’t hold our breath for a new series. That’s OK though. We’ve gone this long without our favourite Wallaby, so it’s just been nice to stop by O-Town for a flying visit to check in on our friends and make sure things are just as fun and anarchic as when we left them – even if they are a little bit different.
Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling is now streaming on Netflix and you owe it to the 90s version of yourself to watch it right away.
