Ratalaika has been cranking out games for the past few months, now. Some good, some… not so good (*cough* Gravity Duck), but they are definitely getting themselves out there. One of their latest games, Mekabolt, follows the same kind of formula as Gravity Duck (4 worlds, 24 stages each, only takes about an hour to finish), but with a MUCH cooler mechanic. Be warned, there will be several comparisons to Gravity Duck in this review.

Mekabolt has a unique mechanic that I can honestly say I haven’t seen before. It revolves around a special gun (the titular Mekabolt) that activates and deactivates enemies that you use to help you reach different areas to ultimately collect a battery and end the level.

Some enemies are simply used as platforms to reach higher levels, while some fly or turn into springs to take you even higher. Some shoot to destroy walls, some shoot to create platforms, but they can all shoot you as well, so watch out.

The graphics are the same 8-Bit style as Gravity Duck, which of course, I enjoy. The music is nothing to write home about, but it didn’t grate on my nerves, at least. There’s not much of a story. “HELP! Mekabolt Park is under attack!” Complete all stages. “You saved Mekabolt Park!” The end.

Final Words:

Overall, the puzzles are a lot of fun with each world introducing a new puzzle element that adds just that much more to the experience. I really enjoy the “Mekabolt Gun” mechanic and would love to see a more fleshed out game designed around it. In my Gravity Duck review I stated that for $5 (£5) you could do worse, but you could definitely do better. Well, this is the better.
