Does It Hold The Up In Hyperspace Nintendo Switch?

In Space, no one can hear you scream. Or mine your devices out for tricked out combat. Subdivision Infinity seems to adhere to that to an extent. “Yourself” is a predetermined protagonist, with not much of a backstory, but is charging with cargo until a rogue unit attacks his ship. Pulled into the conflict, the pilot must defend a carrier against bounty hunters and an empire. Things, however, are definitely not as they seem.

Subdivision Infinity DX has 6 parts or worlds with a half dozen or so missions each. From defence, to retrieve and destroy, there’s quite a bit to go around. With a few mining missions to boot each round, Infinity does hold a bit of a boxed-in feel. Missions can be repeated to gain more currency and build ships. Blueprints are needed to craft better ships, while weapons can be bought and fitted. Upgrades can also enhance ships and weapon capability. There are quite a number of vessels to choose from.

Aesthetically, Infinity holds up more to its’ origin. The music does throw the game’s age to a late 90s-2000s dance title, which would be expected for something of Battletech’s design. Definitely a nice touch if it was going that way. Though the player and other characters are static, the dialogue is text only. Explosions are random, so there is neither one or another to experience. Missile and laser volleys are as quick as a Han Solo shot and just as deadly.

Subdivision Infinity does have some issues at launch. Sometimes the fighting does get a little repetitive in terms of bosses. Destroy this ship “this” rarely goes out to other variances until later on in the title whereas an enemy, with several shots short of a barrage, is ready at the helm to ruin. There’s a bit of a rubber band effect with boss confrontations to a point. While the grind is a mix-up needed, mining equipment cannot be attained quickly enough, causing the hunt for resources to continue for a prolonged amount. I noticed some sound variances in the sounds themselves. One grievance is the lack of view changes. You’re stuck in third person, which could render tedious to dog-fighter vets who crave the cockpit emotion. Speaking of which, it was a bit odd to not see those said screams from the pilot himself while disintegrating into dust on a blow-up. It could be an expectation from what’s being brought before in the terms of Star Fox or Ace Combat. Speed is something that needs to be addressed in the Switch title, as it doesn’t reflect the trailers as much.

Final Words:

Subdivision Infinity DX has the makings of a good space ace shooter. While it is a mobile game first and console game second, Infinity does bring back the Colony Wars feels in a portable way. While with several misses, the Infinity hits are decent enough to chug through the campaign. There is not much in terms of the genre, but in its’ wake of Strike Suit Zero and Starlink, Blowfish has a short star shooter alternative on its’ hands for Switch owners alike.
