At a glance, Gravity Duck (the latest effort from Ratalaika Games) is a simple yet challenging platformer with tight controls and a gravity mechanic where instead of jumping, you flip upside down and land on the opposing platform to avoid enemies and traps. While a neat gimmick, it has been done before and it has been done better (i.e. Metal Storm).

The graphics are a charming 8-Bit affair, which I do enjoy (as evidenced by my handle @8BitPunkPUWC). The music is decent enough until it loops for the hundredth time because it NEVER CHANGES! Even with the game being only about an hour-long, it does grate on your nerves pretty fast. And yes, the game will only last you about an hour. Even with the multiple deaths and restarts.

Speaking of deaths… HOLY CHEAP DEATHS, BATMAN! The controls are tight, so the blame doesn’t lie there. But (especially later in the game) there are some stages that are only beatable through trial and error. For example, a teleporter that teleports you to another teleporter off-screen and drops you directly over a bed of spikes without any time to react before you’re dead and back at the start of the stage. So, the difficulty is very artificial once you figure out the, very simple, patterns of the enemies and layouts of the stages.

There’s essentially no story to the game, but I really wasn’t expecting a masterfully told tale from a game called Gravity Duck. You begin the game with an idol telling you to collect golden eggs for him and OH! By the way. You now have the power to control gravity. Cool? Cool.

Final Words:

So, overall, the game is okay if you’re bored and want to kill an hour. For $5 (£4.99), you could do worse, but you could also do much better.
