The first match of the show was Joaquin Wilde vs Angel Garza to start off the Breakout Tournament. This match was incredible! Garza had the crowd going before he even entered the ring. There wasn’t a dull moment in this match and we also got to see a Garza do a Spanish Fly off the top ropes. Unfortunately though, the match eventually had to come to an end as Garza won with a Butterfly Stunner. I can’t stress how awesome the start of this show was.
Next up was a couple of promos. First, Kushida more or less commented that this is his time. Some of the stuff he said wasn’t translated to English so it was a little hard to understand every word he said, but he got the point across. Next, Damian Priest says we haven’t seen anything yet and that the name Damian Priest will live forever. Nothing too fancy there.
The second match on the card was the Street Profits vs the Forgotten Sons. Before the match started, the Profits made it to where their titles were on the line. What seemed like the end of the match after Ford delivered his Frog Splash, Ryker pulled Ford out of the ring to get the match disqualified. Soon after, Orcan and Burch came to the ring to help the Street Profits with the Forgotten Sons. Once that was settled, they handed the belts to the Profits while Burch tells them, “These are yours, but remember, you owe us.”
After this was a couple more promos. We see a film reel playing footage projected on a wall of what seems to be a riot taking place with a quick shot of Killian Dane in the room. Vanessa Borne and Aliyah are next. They said Mia Yim’s story is sad and pathetic and they can’t relate to it. Aliyah is beyond grateful she gets to put her in her place.
The third match was Nykos Rikos vs Keith Lee. This Rikos guy’s outfit was something else. His left arm, midsection, and right leg were covered but everything else was pretty bare. The ref seemed to be holding back from laughing when he entered the ring too. It was a sight to behold. Needless to say, Lee made quick work of this in about a minute after delivering his Limit Breaker. If you ask me, Lee needs to be the next champ.
Following this was a segment with Adam Cole. He is on his Bay Bay Championship Tour. During this, Cole had some downgrading remarks towards Johnny Gargano. The segment ended with him getting ready to walk into a restaurant called Gargano’s after getting off the phone with Roderick Strong. I’m assuming this segment will continue next week.
Next up was our main event with Io Shirai vs Shayna Baszler in a steel cage match for the NXT women’s championship. When it seemed that Io was about to escape the cage, Baszler’s gang came out to make sure Io could not get out. Candice Lerae would eventually come out to help even the odds. In the end, Io was slamming the cage door on Baszler to try to break out of the Kirifuda Clutch while they were both close to exiting. But this lead to a knocked out Baszler falling over Io, escaping the ring to retain her title. After the match, LeRae would come to support Io but Io attacked LeRae. Io seemed to instantly regret doing this. But as we were thinking she was leaving the ring, she grabbed a chair and went back in the ring to continue the attack. When Io finally walked off, she advised that she doesn’t need any friends, bringing the show to a close.
And that wraps it up for this week’s NXT. This episode did not disappoint. Next week we continue the Breakout Tournament with Isaiah ‘Swerve’ Scott vs Cameron Grimes. Also, we have Roderick Strong vs Tyler Breeze. If next week is half as good as this weeks episode, you won’t want to miss it. Thanks for reading and long live wrestling!
