“Garfield Gameboy’d” Will Absolutely Give You Nightmares

Reading Time ~ 1 minute

Everybody loves Garfield, right? That loveable, chubby, ginger cat with a passion for lasagna and loathing for Monday’s, has been a staple of pop culture for decades and he shows no signs of going away. Well, prepare to have your brain completely broken, because Jim Davis’ iconic moggy just got the nightmare treatment courtesy of pixel artist Lumpy Touch – and you’ll never look at the funny pages the same way again.

Garfield Gameboy’d is a project that draws inspiration from sketches by artist William Burke, a self-taught scribbler who’s turned some of our favourite film and video game characters into the stuff of nightmares. Presented as if it were a real Gameboy title, it opens in an asylum, where a demented Jon Arbuckle screams from his padded cell that something bad is about to happen. For the next 13 minutes, Lumpy Touch takes us on a guided tour through a personal hell as Garfield scuttles around the house looking like the creature from John Carpenter’s The Thing, demanding lasagna and tracking his terrified owner by the smell of his fear.

Garfield regulars Odie, Nermal and Liz also appear, but their presence is in no way a comfort. They too have been horribly morphed in this twisted vision and quite frankly it’s the most horrifying thing we’ve ever seen. Talk about survival horror games – who would have thought the greatest never to be made would be based on a popular daily comic strip?

You can check out the video in its entirety below, but you can bill Lumpy Touch for the psychiatrist fees.
