Pokémon: Detective Pikachu – Movie Review (ish)

moviehead

Whether your reaction to the first ever ‘live-action’ Pikachu was good or bad, it’s a safe bet that you’ve had an opinion on the upcoming Pokémon movie, ever since we had our first glance of the furry yellow rodent way back in November of last year. Well, we are here to tell you, we’ve seen the movie and you are not going to be disappointed.

So what’s Detective Pikachu all about? Well, it’s pretty simple. Tim Goodman is your average 21-year old kid in Ryme City whose normal life is thrown into turmoil after his world famous detective dad goes missing. With nowhere else to turn, Tim joins forces with his dad’s old partner to try to unravel the mystery of his disappearance. Oh, and his dad’s old partner is a Pikachu. Did we not mention that bit? Sorry, we thought the clue was in the movie title.

Voicing everyone’s favourite starter Pokémon is Ryan Reynolds, y’ know, star of perhaps the greatest comic book movie ever made, Green Lantern. Paying such a substantial amount of money to a big name actor like Reynolds does seem like an odd choice though, and probably not for the reasons you might think. You’ll see what we mean in a minute.

You see, despite what preconceptions you might have going into Detective Pikachu, whether it be that the Pokémon look weird, or that this is just another kid flick, the truth is it is actually an extremely intellectual example of modern cinema that instead of relying on flashy gimmicks, and toilet humour, instead tells the aforementioned story of a young boy’s search for his lost father through the medium of … wait for it … pause for dramatic effect … interpretive dance.

You read that right. Detective Pikachu is a modern-day ballet set to a soundtrack of 1980s workout music. Hats off to Warner Bros for thinking outside of the box with this innovative – and risky- spin on such a popular franchise. You can see why casting Ryan Reynolds was an odd decision though considering the distinct lack of dialogue.

Ok, ok. So you’ve probably guessed by now that we haven’t actually seen Detective Pikachu, and instead decided to join in on all the pseudo-leak excitement that’s been doing the rounds on the internet today. The apparently leaked footage was originally tweeted on an account titled @InspectrPikachu, and was quickly picked up on by star Ryan Reynolds who retweeted the link, copying in the official Twitter pages of the movie and distributors Warner Bros. It was at this point that people began to realise exactly what had happened, and we haven’t quite finished slow-clapping for this troll-tastic deed yet.

You can check out the ‘leak’ in its entirety below:

The actual Detective Pikachu will be released worldwide this Friday, and we’ll have a review online as soon as we’ve seen it. For real this time.
