Bird Game +

Released 3rd May 2019 Bird Game + is a third person bird flight simulator set in a simplistic monotone 3D world. You take control of a hand-drawn beautifully animated bird as you traverse the environment avoiding the various fauna and flora.
The game itself is very simplistic and much more a relaxing journey in the vein of Flower by ThatGameCompany, rather than an objective based adventure. You control the bird via the left analogue stick, although you can easily switch to motion controls by pressing the ZR and ZL triggers. The Y button apparently speeds you up, however, I could not notice a difference. The A button makes you grab allowing you to open doors and eat fish, L and R perform barrel rolls (peppy old pal). The game has just 3 levels each with a boss type character at the end, and you can also play a points-based endless mode.
Whilst it has basic visuals there is some occasional slowdown, and for the life of me I cannot understand why, as it generally happens when there is next to nothing on the screen. Avoiding the various scenery elements and sporadic enemies can be somewhat of a hit and miss affair. I think due to the minimalistic art design it is difficult to pinpoint accurately where your avatar sits in the game space, leading you to hit things when you thought you had plenty of room. Now this could be frustrating, and to a small degree it is, but the game throws up such little challenge that your misguided attempts at navigating through each short level rarely result in death. Should you die your respawn point is always close by. Boss battles are simply avoiding their attacks, since you have no offensive output. Music and ambient sounds are pleasant enough.
At a price of around £5/$5 I’m not so sure you’re getting a good deal. It’s not a terrible game but it’s barely a game. It does look nice though.
