Riddled Corpses EX is a twin-stick shooter from French developer COWCAT and is now available on all current-gen formats. The game previously was simply known as Riddled Corpses when it released on the Steam platform back in 2015. We revisited this fun title on the Nintendo Switch for this review.

The presentation is a mixed bag, ranging from the title screen with an anime art style of scantily clad girls for some reason, I mean why not its anime, to a really cool looking retro 8 / 16-bit graphical style for the rest of the game. I am unsure of the anime connection and didn’t feel it was needed or added to the game as Riddled Corpses EX has a horrifying cuteness about its pixel work. The game on a whole is well presented and looks nice, it can be graphic at times with zombies doing their best to do what zombies do best… eating people.

We are treated to a number of different game modes, Story, Arcade and Survival which are all pretty standard affairs and offer what you would expect of each. There are also online leaderboards, for comparing those hi-scores between friends and a few other standard set-up options. There isn’t a massively complex story involved, the world is doomed. The undead walk the land and you need to save the day by fighting through hordes of zombies. This can be attempted alone or with a friend co-op by making your way through diverse locations packed with danger and huge bosses. The game is set up well for co-op play and is a lot of fun in this mode, you share a single field of play which after short while scrolls across keeping the action moving. A partner in combat comes in handy as it is favourable to have an extra set of guns but the downside is you also share continues, so choose wisely when teaming up.

Character selection also plays a part, choose wisely, make good use of special abilities and collected items. You have the option of six playable characters to unlock through progression which all help make the fight to destroy the root of evil that little bit easier. I found that the level structure was better as you got into the game and much of the action is amplified. The difficulty is of a reasonable level and died a lot initially. This is part of the reason why Riddled Corpses EX has a fair amount of grinding involved, repeating stages over and over again in an attempt to build up enough money to purchase the next upgrade. It was fun and quick enough that this didn’t become an issue but some of the targets are pretty high and it is easy to rack up a good few hours in-game time.

This new EX release offers an updated soundtrack, full of chiptune songs and runs at a cool 60 FPS. With local co-op its great fun with a friend. It feels at home on the Nintendo Switch.

Final Words:

Riddled Corpses EX it great fun but it isn’t going to set the world on fire. It does a lot very well and enjoyable when shared. Upgrades and unlockable content will keep you wanting to achieve more and ultimately spending more time with the game. If you like zombies and twin stick-shooters, we know a game you just might like.
