It’s a strange time for The Walking Dead. As we approach the climax of the 9th season, ratings have never been lower. Yet despite the poor viewership, the show is going through a creative renaissance that it has been missing for years with the recent Whisperers arc, even if cast members are dropping like flies.
Things took a massive left turn when the show’s lead actor Andrew Lincoln left the show – presumed dead but actually airlifted to an unknown location to star in his own movie spin-off’s – leaving a huge void in the show that it seemed impossible to fill. But now it looks like Lincoln is beginning to regret his decision to leave, telling co-star Norman Reedus he thinks he left at the wrong time.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Reedus talked about a conversation he’d had with the former Rick Grimes:
“It’s funny because I talked to [Andrew Lincoln] the other day,” Reedus said. “And he was like, ‘Man, I picked the wrong time to leave the show because it’s so f—ing good right now.’ I’m like, ‘Yeah, you did, dude. You picked the wrong time.’”
At this stage, we have no idea what the Rick Grimes movies will look like, or whether any of his fellow cast members will make a surprise appearance, but things might start to take shape in the season finale if rumours circulating about Danai Gurira are to be believed.
So here’s what we know. Gurira’s Michone will leave the show soon, but the circumstances are up in the air. For the entire season since Rick ‘died,’ she’s been looking for him, convinced that he might still be out there, especially after his body was never found. But what if she finds proof that he survived at the climax of this season, which sets her on a course to show up in the movie?
One theory doing the rounds right now is that during ‘The Storm’, several characters will end up stuck in a cabin trying to survive the onslaught of the shows first real winter. To pass the time Eugene will be tampering with his radio system and trying to find other survivors. He’ll not have any success – in typical Eugene fashion – and all but give up until the dying moments when the radio will mysteriously come to life with a very familiar voice on the other end.
Of course, this is all speculation at this point, and having Rick’s voice play over the radio doesn’t mean Andrew Lincoln is returning to the show, but it will create an interesting crossroads for the show and its characters that could change the course of The Walking Dead forever.
What do you think? Will we see Rick Grimes again? Is Michone going to leave after hearing her hubby’s voice on the radio? Why is Eugene suck a style icon? Sound off in the comments!
