James Gunn will return as director of Guardians of the Galaxy Part 3, less than 12 months after being fired by Disney, according to an exclusive report coming out of Deadline.

Gunn had been at the helm of the ultra-popular Marvel movies for the previous two instalments but was removed by Disney after a fusillade of social media posts from over a decade ago were made public, in which Gunn seemingly poked fun of paedophilia and rape.

The cast of Guardians of the Galaxy was quick to show their support for the director, with some of them even threatening to quit the franchise if Disney did not reinstate him. This did not happen, and the long-awaited third instalment in the series was called off indefinitely. But Marvel’s loss was DC’s gain, as Gunn was quickly snapped up to revive the Suicide Squad franchise which had fallen way short of the mark with its initial 2016 movie.

According to Disney, the decision to reinstate James Gunn was made some time ago, after observing how he dealt with the situation publically from afar. Gunn had repeatedly offered an apology to everyone he affected by his posts, in what felt like a genuine attempt to make amends. Let’s be honest – the comments were way out of order but people change and as long as someone is willing to keep changing for the better, and learn from their mistakes, then we can’t ask much more.

No word yet on when Guardians 3 will roll into production, or if Marvel will stick with Gunn’s previous script which was written before his firing. All we know is we’re very excited to have him back behind the camera, and once again leading the way in the MCU.
