Ever since it was announced, Ghostbusters 3 has been a hot topic of conversation. But what do we actually know about the third instalment in the iconic franchise?
1. THE DIRECTOR
We had no idea there was even going to be a new Ghostbusters movie until the son of the original director Jason Reitman dropped the bombshell by uploading a photo of the Ghostbuster logo onto his Instagram. Within seconds the internet was abuzz with speculation as to what this could mean.
It turns out Jason, with the blessing of his father Ivan, has been handed the metaphorical keys to Ecto-1 and has written and will direct what we can only speculate will be called Ghostbusters 3.
2. THE HATERS
The initial reaction to the Ghostbusters 3 announcement was excitement. But this quickly turned to derision when the haters came out of their dank, smelly holes and started to pick fault with everything we knew at the time.
This probably had more to do with how badly the all-female Ghostbusters movie was met by fans, but it wasn’t helped when even actress Leslie Jones – who had been plagued by haters after the 2016 movie failed to recreate the original magic – described it as “something Trump would do”, and called the idea “a dick move”.
3. THE TEASER
Less than 24 hours after Reitman shocked the world with his Instagram post, he unleashed a legit teaser for the movie. Now we didn’t get to see any of the original cast or any hint at what the movie might be about, but we did get some pretty incredible retro music, and a glimpse of Ecto-1 hidden under a sheet in an old barn.
You can check it out below:
4. THE STORY
Jason Reitman has been pretty tight-lipped about plot details so-far, although he has gone on record as saying he was happy with his first draft, and even ran it by his old man who was moved to tears by the idea he’d come up with. Sounds good to us!
So what is the plot? Well, so far all we have is this official – but brief – synopsis:
The film will focus on a family who moves back home to a small town. While there, they begin to learn more about who they are and the secrets of the town itself.
It doesn’t tell us an awful lot does it? It also sounds nothing like the original movies, which were both set in New York City. Reitman assures us that everything that happened in the first movies will still have happened here, so there’s plenty of breathing space for a little exposition.
5. THE CAST
After the all-too-brief synopsis reveal (if you can call it that), character bios were released for the main characters who it turns out will be teenagers. Yep – the main cast won’t be your old school favourites, but instead, they’ll be a bunch of kids. That will be enough to turn a lot of people off, but here at Two Beard Gaming, we’re a little more open-minded to the possibilities this could bring with it.
So what do we know about the kids? Well, the central characters will consist of a 13-year-old boy who is passionate about fantasy, and an “insanely smart” 12-year-old girl. There’s also been casting calls for 2 more kids – male and female alike – 1 who is really into science and the other a total bimbo. No actors have been cast so far, but there have been talks of Stranger Things favourite Finn Wolfhard being considered for one of the roles, which we have to admit would be pretty cool, if not a tad obvious. Carrie Coon (Avengers: Infinity War, The Sinner) has also been attached as a maybe.
6. THE ORIGINALS
Ever since January we’ve been hearing talk that the remaining 3 cast members would return as part of the Ghostbusters 3 cast. Then, in the next breath people weren’t so sure. It would be a massive shame if Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, and Ernie Hudson didn’t make a come back just this once as a way to pass the torch to the next generation, but as of this moment, we really don’t know, but we’d be happy just to see Ray return as he was always the heart and soul of the team, to begin with.
7. THE RELEASE
As of press time, Ghostbusters 3 is scheduled to begin filming in May, with a release date of mid-2020. This could all change of course, but we’re hopeful that we’ll know exactly who to call next year.
