A prince, a magic ball, and the King of All Cosmos that destroyed the solar system. Katamari Damacy is about fixing your fathers mistakes by rolling up everything possible and turning them into the stars and planets that father dearest destroyed in the first place.

Originally released in 2004 on the PlayStation 2, the series has come out with sequels and spinoffs on almost every platform, but none of them have ever been able to capture the original charm from the first game. This is probably why Namco decided to have it remastered, and put on the Nintendo Switch as Katamari Damacy REROLL. It looks cleaner, feels familiar and has a perfect home with the Switch.

If you haven’t played any of the titles in the series, the opening scene will be a big indicator of how weird this game is. There are dancing pandas, singing ducks, and fish tied to balloons floating carelessly away. Instructions are given to you by the Kings floating head, spewing rainbows when he’s done talking or wants to beam you back into space. *BLEGH*

Controls are easy and simple. Use both joysticks to push your katamari around and start rolling things up. Unfortunately, the controls sometimes don’t always feel too responsive, and I usually have to flip the prince around completely in order to make some turns. As frustrating as this can be, it’s easily forgiven as soon as you roll up the next unsuspecting victim to soon be turned into space dust. It’s just so rewarding.

You can only pick up objects smaller than you, and the usual goal is to get your katamari as big as possible within a time limit. Each colourful low-poly object you snatch up gets you closer to the goal, but beware- if you run into something that is bigger than you, not only will you not pick it up, but it will probably knock off objects and make your katamari smaller. Things don’t diverge much from here, with some challenges spicing it up by being focused on what you pick up instead of just getting a massive ball of randomly assorted things. I should add, this game is accompanied by one of the best soundtracks and contains collectables hidden in the game like the headphones shown above, for those of you who enjoy being a completionist.

Final Words:

This game doesn’t add anything new to the series and it doesn’t need to. It is just as you remembered in 2004, but now you can play it while in the backseat of an Uber drive from the airport. So, if you are a long-time fan, or new to the series, I recommended picking up the title and rolling up everyone and everything in sight.
