Some random website [insert name as appropriate] said that most gamers are in their mid-thirties so Awesome Pea should hit most right in the nostalgia feels with the games art style. Pull the Switch away from your face, adjust those glasses, and relive the Gameboy days. There are two filters to adjust your screen to CRT and tube mode, both are enabled to start. A friendly aesthetic, timer, and counter for collectables and the journey begins.

Greedy Pea is our money hungry hero that double jumps his or her way through thirty levels across four islands. The map shows coins and gems collected vs possible in-game, but not the time taken to beat the level, so I don’t see the purpose of that. I like the look of the map a lot, navigate it by clicking left and right. If you exit a level to the map and restart a previous level, each time you exit to the map it will reset you at the furthest level you’ve completed. A little cumbersome for those aiming to collect all of the coins and gems.

The level themes are repetitive and the concept follows, with few exceptions. Once I ran through each level themes the first time I was impressed with the variety, but then oh, there’s another downwell level. There is another train level, so on an so forth. Some levels were super short of you avoided collecting all coins and gems. If you want to make this game last an hour or more, go for the collectables for sure. Some can be beaten in as little as nineteen seconds.

Awesome Pea is cut from the same cloth as Super Meat Boy, but in bite-size form. This is a gateway to tough, precision platformers. The double jump feature is great, but I didn’t feel the button response time was tight enough. My sweet Pea didn’t jump when I wanted them to every time, and that caused some deaths. Jump response wasn’t the best. One level I found a moving platform didn’t keep my Pea on it, and I fell to my death. That’s the opposite of what should happen. I also didn’t like that if you purposely fell off a cliff, you couldn’t jump in mid-air. If you jumped off, you could double jump though.

Final Words:

Awesome Pea is a short but sweet game that would be good for when you’re not sure what to play in between bigger titles. The price point is great, and if you aim to collect all of the coins and gems you’ll get more value from the game. It didn’t cause me much frustration but also wasn’t very rewarding to complete.
