A pain in the glass?
Two years ago developers Onyx Lute released Glass Masquerade to the world, on Steam, Play Store, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. As of 8th February 2019 it’s the turn of the Nintendo Switch.
A simplistic yet beautiful puzzle game, it feels at home on the world’s greatest handheld. The challenge is thus, construct a stained glass clock from the fragments displayed around the edges of the screen, and that’s it. Glass Masquerade is really just a jigsaw puzzle, however the stained glass clocks look lovely, the music is delightfully relaxing and the controls work well.
You start each game off with between 4 to 6 starter pieces, these pieces have a small circular marker upon them and it is abundantly obvious where these bits go. Once you have these in place it’s all down to you, each fragment will automatically rotate to its correct axis once you select it, never frustrating yet occasionally challenging the game is an excellent way to kill 5 minutes, this being the maximum time you’ll need to complete one of the 25 puzzles.
The touch controls don’t really work, mainly because your sausage fingers will obscure the piece, and it’s for that reason that we believe the Switch version of this game is the best. On your PC or home consoles you’d be playing this game in front of the TV or at a desk, but this game is one of those games which are best suited for filling short gaps. Advertisement breaks whilst watching TV, short bus rides, taking a dump or watching a TV show which requires no concentration, conversely playing this game on a tablet or phone doesn’t work as well as on the Switch because of the aforementioned fat finger issue.
My advice is to give it a go, at just $11.99 or £10.79 (currently an additional 20% off) via the eShop, it isn’t going to break the bank, and you never know if you love it you’ll have the opportunity to pick up the sequel, which should be with us in less than a month.
