Nintendo Switch – Essential Buyers Guide

Reading Time ~ 3 minutes

For most of us buying a new console is a big decision and represents a level of commitment, not to forget a fair chunk of money. In a series of specially crafted guides the team at TBG aim to help alleviate some of the pressure by providing a detailed overview of what’s hot and what’s not. Even if you already own the console this should help with all the little quality of life products you should keep an eye out for because let’s face it there’s always room for a bigger memory card, additional controllers or that awesome case!

Nintendo Switch Console:

With the Switch, Nintendo has finally realised the groundwork they set out when creating the Wii U – an all-in-one device that provides a full console experience at home and on the go in a snap. So you get more of the games you love and however you like. As with most Nintendo consoles, the Switch comes in a variety of different options ranging from colours to bundles but all have the same core machine at heart. Here are some of the best currently on offer.

Top 5 picks

1. Nintendo Switch – Neon Red/Neon Blue
2. Nintendo Switch – Grey
3. Nintendo Switch w/ Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
4. Nintendo Switch w/ Diablo III  + Carry Case
5. Nintendo Switch Smash Bros. Edition + Game Code

It doesn’t matter how good a console is if the software selection isn’t right, thankfully Nintendo has got this side spot on. Although, with thousands of games available both physically and digitally it can be a bit of a minefield. But rest assured there is definitely something for everyone, ranging from first-party exclusives, HD remasters and ports to lesser-known indie gems.

Top 5 picks

1. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
2. Super Mario Odyssey
3. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
4. Minecraft
5. Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee!

More so on the Nintendo Switch there are certain accessories that are must buys. The Switches portable nature means things like a decent screen protector, carry case and battery pack are essential. Here’s a rundown of what’s best to get you started on the right foot.

Top 5 picks

1. Nintendo Switch Pro Controller
2. SanDisk Ultra 128GB microSDXC Memory Card
3. Orzly Black Protective Carry Case
4. Nintendo Switch Joy-Con Controller Pair
5. Venom Power Bank with Kick Stand

The toys to life movement had its time in the limelight and faded spectacularly, its a shame really. Nintendo has been really smart with their version though. Their figures, known as Amiibo, are built into pretty much everything they do and can be seen as more of a platform opposed to being restricted to a specific title. Amiibo figures offer in-game rewards and bonus content simply by waving the toy over the NFC reader (built into the left Joy-Con) and voila! You also get a really good looking model for the most part, some can be difficult to track down but here are some of our favourites.

Top 5 picks

1. Pikachu No.10
2. Ice Climbers
3. Wolf
4. Ridley
5. Inkling Girl
