A fun point and click in the very literal sense
Demetrios is a great old school point and click game that follows the story of Bjorn Thonen an antique dealer from Paris. Bjorn is robbed one night after he comes home drunk and wakes up the next morning to find his recently purchased statue, with a stone tablet, has gone missing in the robbery.
Demetrios: The BIG Cynical Adventure stands out from the other point and click games I have played as you can die in many creative and stupid ways. They never fail to make you laugh and the game is funnier than I thought it would ever be. The main character Bjorn is highly sarcastic, none more so than when you are dealing with the police in the events of chapter one. At this point, you can also get arrested for doing stupid things in the Police Station ranging from photocopying your ass on the photocopier or pissing in the potted plant. While these bits are very childish they really appeal to my sense of humour and kept me going through the game. The story itself is generally likeable and fun and the game can be finished between two hours and ten hours.
The art style is superb, the developers have given it a cartoony look which works well. It also seems fitting as when the game decides to kill you in one of the many creative and funny ways it’s not too graphic, often it doesn’t actually show you the death.
Now onto the bad bits, the game is massively obtuse and relies on you finding cookies in very obscure places as a means to get hints on what to do next. Upon eating a certain amount of cookies it will just tell you what to do anyway. To be honest this is the worst element of the game and the obtuseness of how to progress further becomes increasingly difficult. Apart from that minor annoyance Demetrios: The BIG Cynical Adventure is very good and overall enjoyable. As we know the Nintendo Switch doesn’t have a system driven trophy or achievement system like on the PlayStation or Xbox respectively but thankfully this game has its own. You still get that notification pop for doing something supremely dumb which adds to the enjoyment.
Demetrios: The BIG Cynical Adventure is a budget game but very fun to play. Depending on your sense of humour you may get some laughs out of it also. Currently, it is priced at a more reasonable £3.29 on the PlayStation Store. It’s cross-buy with the Vita as well which adds to the value, so if you have access to other formats it might be worth shopping around.
