I didn’t know much about the game before I started playing Trine. Yet, from the few screenshots I saw, I was immediately intrigued. I took it upon myself to review it and here I am. Trine Enchanted Edition is a port of the game released on PC in 2014 by the studio Frozenbyte (developer of Nine Parchments on Switch). The Enchanted Edition is Trine (originally released in 2009) but remade using Trine 2’s engine featuring online gameplay with up to three players.

It’s a 2.5D action platformer where you play as three heroes who are bound by a mysterious artifact. What I mean by 2.5D it’s the fact there are sometimes parts where you can go vertically but these segments are few and not common. Each hero is unique and they have very different move sets. The Knight, for example, is very good for attacking but not useful for other things. There’s also a Thief who’s good with speed and agility and a Wizard that can summon various objects. You can alternate between each character at any time. The stages are built so that you can solve them in various ways using any character you want. I liked the fact that the game encourages thinking out of the box and finding your own way to solve the many obstacles. This game nails the platforming and each level is well designed. The mix of puzzle elements is very neat and I really liked that. I also think the visuals are stunning. The game looks gorgeous. Each stage looks unique and there’s a sense of enchantment going on. There’s also a great soundtrack that really adds to the magical atmosphere. There isn’t much story wise as it’s dispersed between levels and told by a narrator that does a wonderful job. Still, the story is solid and effective, it’s just not the reason you’ll play want to play the game.

There are a few flaws notably how repetitive it can feel. Each level is indeed unique but the problem is that there’s nothing that expands or changes the gameplay. You’re still doing the same thing with a few shakeups here and there. I wish the developers would have done more to shake up the gameplay a little. The character’s abilities only get minor upgrades. The game runs great on Switch. In portable mode, the game runs and plays great with no slow-downs. Docked it looks great. There’s no doubt it was a port well done!

Final Words:

Trine Enchanted Edition is a solid game. Whether it’s its beautiful visual and environments or its brilliant platforming. Each character is unique and the fact that you can control each of them at any point feels refreshing. The story isn’t fleshed out and there can be instances where you can feel some repetitiveness but that doesn’t undermine the fact that Trine is a great game. I highly recommend it.
