Omen of Sorrow is a fighting game that takes characters from classic literature and pits them against a more horror-themed background to layout this story-driven fighter. It is the vision of developer AOne Games who are a small independent team formed in 2015 and looks to be their first major release. Hopefully, it can stand up to some of the other fighters currently on the market without being knocked out.
There are a total of 12 characters waiting to be played with but there are only a few characters that are actually worth playing as. The main standouts from the roster are Zafkiel and Gabriel, their moves flow very well during fights and these two are the basis of the first story content in the game. They are both Demon Hunters. Accompanying Zafkiel is a Nephilim by the name of Gabriel, an angel who is searching out for the evil in the world. He is an apprentice who actually turns out to be way more powerful due to a sacred mark on his hand. The reason for this hasn’t been explained in the first story, I will in time go back over the game and finish all the other stories due to my curiosity more than wanting to play any more of this game.
As for the gameplay, fighting is slow, it is very hard to pull off successful combos which for me is the key for any decent fighting game. Unfortunately for Omen of Sorrow, I am still messing around with the excellent Street Fighter V and Marvel VS. Capcom Infinite. I regularly dip back into these and you can really tell the difference in quality.
The rest of the characters were instantly forgettable so I’ll only run through some of history’s more notable names. First off, you have Adam (Frankenstein’s monster) who is closest to the grapplers that appear in other fighters just without any of the grappling skills to back it up. Imhotep who, if you have seen the Mummy, you will know an ancient Egyptian chancellor and antagonists of the story. When the game starts he is an old man so I am assuming that more comes in the second and third story arcs. Radegonda is a gargoyle that has come to life, she is a very difficult character to successfully make combos with as all of her moves are air-based attacks. This is fundamentally problematic as most of the other characters don’t jump. Quasimodo, who really needs no name drop here, is the Hunchback of Notre-Dame. He is supposed to be an agile character due to his use of grappling hooks and ropes but sadly he is slow and telegraphs every one of his moves. In essence, he is quite useless.
Omen of Sorrow has a number of bugs and issues but I have learnt to forgive them as most are minor. An example is that the dialogue in the very short cutscenes begins duplicating itself towards the end of a scene. Or my personal favourite, one of the sound effects while Zafkiel is running off the screen sounds like the Knights from Monty Python and the Holy Grail who use the coconuts for their horse sound effects.
My internet was a bit crappy today so didn’t have a chance to give the multiplayer a decent try. This is ironic as they have lauded it as being lag free due to a specific piece of software running in the background. The props that I will give the game is that the backgrounds are beautifully rendered and look stunning but that doesn’t make up for the boring gameplay and shoddy collision detection.
While Omen of Sorrow is a nice idea and setting the core mechanics simply don’t play that well. The story mode is long and meandering, at the moment I have gone through the first main story. It may get better and if it does I will update my review but that won’t change the way it plays. I give this a 4/10 but with patches could possibly be increased later down the line.
