October 31st sees Secret Base launch a free update for Streets of Red: Devil’s Dare Deluxe starting with the Switch version – featuring all-new secret bosses, online leaderboards and additional language options. We thought it the perfect time to reach out to Secret Base as part of our Creators Corner feature.
What inspired you to become a game developer?
Life! Like every other dev, I grew up playing video games. I never thought about making games growing up because it never really seemed like it would be an option… until 10 years ago when the local government started encouraging people to venture into the indie scene and so I lept into it.
How long have you been in the gaming industry?
About 10 years!
Tell everyone a little about your latest release?
Streets of Red is a love letter to everything about the 80/90s, aka my childhood. It’s about arcade beat’em ups, it’s about classic gaming and it’s about good old horror movies, except all smashed into one package to make it triple awesome.
Describe what a usual day in the life of you would be?
I work. I eat. I sleep. Repeat.
What would you say has been the biggest challenge in getting this game to market?
The industry has gotten incredibly crowded over the past 10 years. Getting any visibility without some AAA indie visual has gotten harder and harder over the years. We count on publishers, but as we know, sometimes deals and negotiations can go bad. With Streets of Red, that happened to us not just once but twice, setting us back way more than it ever should have. It’s unfortunate, but such is the life of a dev sometimes.
If you could go back in time, with your current skill-set, is there anything you would change about a game?
I don’t think it’s ever really about skill-set, but more of a time/money budget issue. We have a small budget, a small time frame before money burns out, what can you do? So if I were to go back in time, I’m not sure how much I can change with the same time/budget.
However, if I had more time and budget, I will probably add colours (instead of the monotone look) and more levels. Don’t get me wrong though, I think there’s something cool about the monotone look, but I also realize many players are just sick of anything monotone thanks to last generation brown theme fatigue.
Tell us about the thing that you are most proud of in your career?
When Streets of Red was released, it hit the EU store top 10 best selling game! I was told we got up to 6th, but I didn’t see it for myself since I am logged in to the US store. I got the screenshot of us on 9th, and I am eternally grateful for the result 🙂
What is the next goal for the team and are there any future projects on the horizon (that you can tell us about)?
We just wrapped up the free Monster Challenger update for Halloween. The next step would be to bring this to Steam… while taking a much needed break 🙂
