Do you own a Switch? You need this game. Make it the first game you purchase because it’s on sale and you will not regret it. There is a reason it is highlighted as the main game of Nintendo’s featured games $9.99 and under.
SteamWorld Dig is a 2D platformer filled with dig-and-loot goodness, wonderful colours and graphics that will keep your attention. The game begins with our main character Rusty, who inherits his late Uncle’s mine and pickaxe. His legacy fuels your mission to find what he has left for you in the dirt. Pickaxe your way underground and collect minerals to sell for money. Use the money for items and upgrades to further your way down the mine.
The art style and colours are perfect. Every bit of this game is so satisfying that I must say, I’ve beaten this game and am on my second play-through. Steamworld Dig was the exact game I was looking for to itch a certain video game scratch. This game quickly started at the top five Switch games for me, and months later has remained.
Controls are good, but nothing to get excited about. There is no sort of “hack and slash” element to this game so each enemy can be a threat. Health can be upgraded to overcome the eight possible enemies you will fight throughout the game.
The map will be “dug out” while you explore, as shown in the screenshots. There are hidden areas so keep an eye out for differences in the dirt to hit with your pickaxe.
As pictured above and below, I challenge you to find this Easter Egg of an area in the game. The level design is fun and attractive. It varies in style whether it be in the main areas or side areas found while digging. Upgrades and purchases will allow you to return to previously conquered areas to access loot and treasures. Once you progress enough, more merchants will be unlocked in order to purchase different upgrades that will help your journey.
This game is great fun and has mostly relaxed gameplay. It’s easy to hop in and out of this game whenever you feel like looting the mine. I highly recommend buying Steamworld Dig, I really enjoyed it. Quality game with a wonderful art style.
