Part tactical RPG, part Peggle, part Bust-A-Move. Squids Odyssey is an amalgamation of different game types, which essentially adds a puzzle-like element to a regular RPG battle system. Released back in 2011 on iOS and subsequently on the 3DS and Wii U, Squids Odyssey is a well-polished game which will now, hopefully, be played by a larger audience.

You start the game with a party of squids all with different attributes, ranged attack, heal ability, speed attack and power attacks. Viewed from a top-down perspective the game has a high-quality cartoon aesthetic, which looks as though it could have been produced through the UbiArt engine. Your team are navigated around the screen using a slingshot method, a-la Bust-A-Move, Peggle, Angry Birds. As your squids are propelled around the play space they have a physics reaction similar to that as billiards. The aim is for you to strike your enemies thereby reducing their health, you can use the environment to rebound off of walls, hit your opponent into urchins or knock them off the play space. In-game currency is used to upgrade your team and buy new team members.

Due to the heritage of the game, it is best played using the touchscreen, it can be played with physical controls but this is not the best or easiest way to play. Playing docked can be frustrating at times, although the shorter levels and excellent touchscreen controls mean that this game is one which is really designed to be played on the go and in short sessions.

Final Words:

Available to purchase now in the eShop for $14.99 or £13.49 Squids Odyssey is a good fun game. I’d probably wait for it to drop in price though before committing to a purchase as there are better games available at this relatively high price point.

  1. Love the colors and games it’s compared to, but this looks like best fit for mobile. A bit much for game-play from what you explained as well. Going to be a pass for me. Thanks for the Review!
