Ghost Town Games and Team17 are back with Overcooked!2, the sequel of 2016’s much-loved yet franticly frustrating co-op culinary console hit. With a whole menu of new features, stages and customisation options it’s time to travel back to the Onion Kingdom for one more adventure. Teamwork, customer satisfaction and speed will be key in becoming the number one chef in town. Does this sequel do enough to warrant a look, let’s fire up the grill!

Overcooked! 2 starts off at a slow pace, allowing newcomers to get to grips with the core mechanics and acting as a refresher course for returning players. This is soon forgotten though as the game cranks up the heat like a red-faced Gordon Ramsay in Hells Kitchen. Much like the original, the main objective in Overcooked is to prepare meals for hungry customers within the given time limit, details of each order are given in the top left corner of the screen. Points are awarded for meals prepared and successfully delivered after the timer is up, points are exchanged for a maximum of three stars, sounds simple right?

Each level provides a unique or themed location to cook in, locals range from standard kitchens to something a little more bizarre – like moving vehicles and ships. Throw in obstacles, platforms and ever-evolving dynamic stages not one playthrough is ever quite the same. Even other players, that should be there to help inevitably slow you down and it won’t be long before things begin to unravel. Orders will be missed, wrong ingredients used and pans burst into flames burning down kitchens. Some levels are harder than others, naturally, so teamwork and strategy come into play. Don’t expect to three-star each stage without a little practice first. New chefs can be unlocked via progression but the ability to have local or online friends jump in and play ad-hoc is probably Overcooked! 2’s greatest feature.

On the visual side Overcooked! 2 keeps with the stylisation of the first, just with a new lick of paint. The character models are charming and cartoon-like, the Nintendo Switch version tested did suffer from a number of framerate drops which hopefully will be patched over time. There were also a few bugs which made ingredients seemingly disappear from time to time. The soundtrack is punchy adding to the gravity of each countdown as it speeds up in the final moments.

Final Words:

Overcooked! 2 is a worthy successor and does a great job of adding new features while keeping the core elements that made the original so much fun to play. It’s not perfect and has a lot of frustrations that carry over but that’s part of what makes this game so enjoyable to play. Multiplayer is where Overcooked 2 excels and is a worthy addition to any collection.
