Picture Mega Man X in a faster, more imaginative, roguelike game and you have 20XX. Before the game begins you have the option to scout upgrades for later purchase (in-game collectables, not money), daily/weekly challenges that include an online ranking system, boss rush runs and a seeded challenge. ‘Seeded’ means you choose which handicaps are enabled on your run. Online and couch co-op are available from the start, so grab a friend or take a solo adventure at your chosen difficulty.

Vibrant colours keep the levels fresh and the amazing level design makes the linear aspect interesting. Side paths lead to treasure chests of health and collectables if you dare to test your skills. Enemies range from stand-still, to erratic, to flying and some in between. Bad guys will change for each run as every adventure is different. You choose one of three bosses at the end of each level to take on and possibly steal their power at the end. You’ll also have the option to choose the in-game currency (nuts) or another option. Beat the level and boss in the given time allowed shown in the bottom left corner and receive a bonus.

20XX also features full co-op. Play with a friend on the couch or over the internet!

No matter the difficulty, this game is a sure test of your platforming skills. Watch your health as you jump through obstacles and time your landings amid quick-moving enemies. This game tripped me up in areas I previously dominated. Any ‘run’ can rack up your time to an hour or more. Pause on the home screen of the main page and select ‘datalore’ to discover how much of this game you have yet to uncover. Question marks will fill your screen with undiscovered objectives to find. The internet says this game takes three and a half hours to finish, but my guess is that you will take more time to complete and much longer to enjoy this game to the fullest.

Final Words:

I love this game and it has really stuck out as a memorable game amongst the titles I’ve played this year. At $18 on the eShop I find this game WELL worth the cost and hope you do too.
