Grab the Bottle – Nintendo Switch

Grab the Bottle for Nintendo Switch is another release from developer and publisher Sometimes You. The title is a quirky puzzle game in which you must solve puzzles by stretching your arm through the level. If you can remember snake on the old Nokia’s then you won’t be far off.

The aim of each stage is to manoeuvre an ever-extending arm to grab the bottle, not just a clever name. This must be done while avoiding anything hazardous en route. To make things a little more tricky for the player, Grab the Bottle brings physics as well as the puzzle element into the mix. You must grab, pull and drop objects to get to the goal bottle. On the way you find different kinds of obstacles that need to be overcome, there isn’t always a single solution which leads to some crazy adventures.

Story mode has dozens of levels set in locations ranging from attics to amusement parks

The game starts in the 50’s and this is where our story begins, somewhere in rural America, where one particularly strong-minded baby is taking his first steps and discovers that anything is possible. Especially as he seems to have, convenient to the game mechanic, an infinitely stretchy arm.

Grab the Bottle follows the life of this boy, from cradle to grave, solving many levels of puzzles inspired by “real life problems” on the way. The central element to the story is the specific craving for bottles the main character has and the scenarios include stuff like finding a precious antique bottle from an attic or just grabbing a bottle of cold beer after a hard workday.

The main story mode offers around 10 hours of gameplay which is more than enough, to be honest. The game mechanic plays well but is fairly limited in what you can do, visuals are decent enough with a pop art comic style but it did have a budget feel to it. The animation is pretty much non-existent and the soundtrack does the job.

The Verdict

Grab the Bottle is a throwaway experience which can be fun at times but there really isn’t a lot in the way of gameplay. If you enjoyed the idea behind the mobile game Snake then this will give you a similar experience on the Nintendo Switch. It retails at sub £5 and in this day and age although it isn’t a massive amount I just feel that there are better games available even at this low price point. It is also available for cheaper on other formats.
