The Adventures of Bertram Fiddle is an episodic point and click adventure for the Nintendo Switch published by Chorus Worldwide Games. The first episode to release, A Creadly Business, is set in 1884’s Victorian London. A vicious murderer, known as Geoff, is on the loose and causing terror while managing to evade even the world’s greatest detective Sherlock Holmes over the past 10 years.

Step forward Bertram, a hapless explorer, who has always stood in the shadows of the great detective but will he get his chance in the limelight? It’s up to you, with the assistance of your Peruvian Cyclops sidekick Gavin to thwart the nefarious criminal.

The Adventures of Bertram Fiddle released originally back in 2014 on PC and mobile devices. For the most part, this game is a standard, run of the mill point and click adventure much in the same vein as the excellent Monkey Island or Broken Sword series. What sets this to one side that it doesn’t contain any of those obtuse puzzles, unlike the aforementioned.

Bertram Fiddle is a straightforward game to pick up and playthrough. All of the puzzles are extremely logical and have obvious solutions. This game, part one of two, took me just over one hour to complete. It costs £4.99 currently via the Switch eShop, good value for money? Maybe not but I did enjoy my short time with this game. The graphical style is lovely, with a nod to Cartoon Network visuals. The voice acting is great and this coupled with sometimes genuinely funny dialogue, distracts you from the basic nature of the game. It was designed to be played on a touchscreen and this is exactly how you should play it, the cursor movement is far too slow and as such playing this in docked mode could lead to slight frustration.

Final Words:

Controls and length aside, I really quite enjoyed my time with The Adventures of Bertram Fiddle: Episode 1: A Dreadly Business. My suggestion would be to turn off the music for that optimum playing experience, it’s far too intrusive over the dialogue. Additionally, despite having been out for some time on other formats there is no release date for the second episode which is odd.
