Toki Tori 2+ - Nintendo Switch Trailer

Dutch game developer Two Tribes released Toki Tori 2 for the Wii U back in April of 2013. Six months later it received an update featuring new puzzles, music and notably adding the ‘+’ to the title. Now in 2018 it hits the Nintendo Switch with a number of great new additions and for the first time ever the ability to play this wonderful game on the go. The original Toki Tori was the first game ever released by the developer, in 2001 on GameBoy Color. The game was a level-based egg collection puzzle platformer starring a cartoon chicken, that was remade into a WiiWare launch title in 2008. It has since appeared on many platforms and again will also find a new home on the Switch.

We reached out to the developers to ask them eggxactly (see what we did there) How did Toki Tori 2 come about?

“Toki Tori 2+ was the first game in years that we made without a publisher looming over our shoulders. We worked on it as long as necessary to really make it shine, and we wanted it to be a completely different experience than the first Toki Tori. To achieve this goal, we formulated a bunch of rather bold principles”

“Starting off, we wanted a large open world without any traditional puzzle items. Our chicken hero has just two moves, whistle and stomp, with great complexity arising from that simple core. The world opens up as you learn more about its creatures and other characteristics, meaning that inquisitive players can go anywhere, anytime, right from the start, while less experienced players can simply follow the game’s flow”

“To raise the stakes even further, we wanted everything in Toki Tori 2 to speak for itself, literally. The game’s story is told through interactive in-game setpieces that never take the controls away from the player. And even though we’ve added some telepathic frog messages since the initial release, you still have to figure out most of it by yourself, through experimentation”

The change in hardware has allowed the squeal to deviate and expand from what the original had to offer giving us a different gaming experience, which has paid off. There’s a vast amount of content packed into Toki Tori. After puzzle-solving your way to five Ancient Frogs and saving the island from a strange pollution, you can still find 100s of golden wings, snap dozens of creature pictures and go achievement hunting. The game is really fun to play and will keep you entertained for many hours. The developers have even thrown in some new secrets and puzzle solutions. Plus, you can now create checkpoints wherever you like, allowing for easy experimentation. Puzzles tend to be solved by interacting with on-screen creatures which help you to progress through the levels gaining access to a previously unavailable area. There is a fair a learning curve, things start off straightforward but as you delve deeper into the game it can become very tricky when having to manage a number of assisting creatures at once. Much of this is a case of trial and error, learning from each mistake as you aren’t given much in the way of in-game tips.

The experience works really well in handheld mode and even when docked. The bright cartoon styled graphics visibly pop when playing out and about. Its pick up and play nature make it ideal for those quick bursts when you have some time to spare. The simple control scheme pays off making it accessible to all but has enough to learn in remembering the songs to offer the more experienced gamer a challenge. Even though the main game can be finished in a relatively short amount of time it’s going to keep you coming back for a long time.

Final Words:

With the tweaked gameplay, smooth 60 fps graphics, in-game achievements, HD Rumble support and even video capture support this is a worthy addition to any Switch collection whether you are playing for the first time or revisiting.
